You have heard the saying. “Phone down, Head’s up!” This phrase is focused mostly on the seriousness of driving, riding a bike, even walking while on the phone. It’s physically dangerous. Have you ever had someone walk in front of your car – or ride their bike in front of your car? Or worse, slowly swerving towards you as they are driving, only to jerk their wheel so they are back in their lane, giving you a “oops, sorry!” half wave as they cruise by. So much to to shake your head at. So disconnected to what is going on around them – and injuries, even death, have been the result of this. Nothing to minimize.
What about “Phone down, Head’s up!” when it comes to another potential injury? So much loss of relationships, communication, or just being present. Ringtones, beeps, reminders of business at hand. But also games, social media. Why are we so intrigued with what everyone else is doing (some people we don’t even know) versus being intrigued with all that is happening right around us. I have personally watched people miss whole conversations. Miss participating in plans being made. MIss hearing a great joke. MIss sharing special moments with loved ones, friends, even the chance to make a new friend, as they stared into their phone. I have been guilty of it myself. Getting caught up in “just checking” what that message was. What ‘tricks’ have you tried?
*Put your phone on Airplane mode during special events *Remove social media apps from your phone. *Turn off as many notifications as you can *Remove Game apps * Find a tracker – an app that actually shows you how much time are you spending on social media etc? Might….be….scary. What have you done? Share it with me and let me post it!
